Marian,

One thing I also recommend when listening to a story, is work very hard not to share your own story back right of way. When someone tells you their project budget was cut, and they are disappointed, etc, avoid relating your experience with the same (even though it's a really good story!!) and focus all your energy on what this person is telling you about the current problem. Maybe later there is time for a share-back...

Hi Marian.

I recommend keeping your authenticity, the real you, at the forefront. Sure there is training to be a good speaker, and training to be a leader, also protocol for many situations, but being authentic will really keep your message memorable. When you're not trying to be someone else, please someone else, the essence of your message and why you care about it shines through.

Thank you for sharing, Marian. It's important not to try too hard and complicate your message. You won't look less smart for keeping it simple and impactful. Quite the opposite!

Thanks, Marian, for another informative article. I have to chuckle at the differences found between men and women. We all know they exist; science putting its stamp on it is overkill! :)

I don't disagree, Francie, that a collaborative approach is preferable. What I was warning against, is waiting too long after the leader becomes aware of something amiss on the horizon--action is necessary, but that action does not have to be controlling. Thanks for your wise thoughts.

Thank you for the great words, Marian. I would like to challenge the last sentence about the leader having to act quickly to gain control. Most times, this tactic doesn't work too well. The leader can see the upcoming challenges on the horizon and bring to the team. "How can I help our team overcome these obstacles? What can you do to help overcome these obstacles?"
